چکیده

Detection of intensity flashes in the blowfly photoreceptor is limited by photon noise in the input signal as well as noise contributed by transduction components within the photoreceptor. Our analysis uses an ideal observer and a model of blowfly phototransduction to compute the threshold for optimal detection of intensity flashes as background intensity varies. We find that detection threshold increases with background light intensity according to a power function, that the threshold for low light levels is limited mainly by the photon noise, and that the threshold at high light levels is limited mainly by the channel noise. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. Quantifying information and performance for flash detection in the blowfly photoreceptor

Performance on specific tasks in an organism's everyday activities is essential to survival. In this paper, we extend information-theoretic investigation of neural systems to task specific information using a detailed biophysical model of the blowfly photoreceptor. We determine the optimal detection performance using ideal observer analysis and find that detection threshold increases with backg...

The Statistical Detection of Threshold Signals in the Retina

1. Photographic records of impulses from single ganglion cells in the cat's retina were made while the retina was stimulated by flashes occurring once a second. Ten flashes at each of several intensities near threshold were used. 2. For the purpose of statistical analysis, the number of impulses (x) falling within a critical period following each flash was used as an index of the response. Hist...

Phototransduction in primate cones and blowfly photoreceptors

Phototransduction in primate cones is compared with phototransduction in blowfly photoreceptor cells. Phototransduction in the two cell types utilizes not only different molecular mechanisms, but also different signal processing steps, producing range compression, contrast constancy, and an intensity-dependent integration time. The dominant processing step in the primate cone is a strongly comp...

A Comparative Study of the “Ideal Observer” in Meta-ethics and the “Divine Command” Theory

The two theories of “ideal observer” and “divine command” are theories on constructionism and voluntarism. According to the ideal theory, ethical realities are defined based on the attitudes of the assumed ideal observers and the foundation of these theories is formed on negation of the independent ethical realities. Therefore, existence of independent and evident ethical realities based on whi...
